Don't worry that you may not beable to hear it when it sounds an alarm. If you live in any area that is prone to Tornados the Weather Radio is a must for home safety. Just turn it on and put it somewhere in your home that is out of the way. Trust me it's loud. But thats a good thing if your family's safety is at possible risk.
very well pleased and highly recommend this product --no static which is a great featureWilliam R. Bailey
Unfortunately, when taken off the cradle, the weather radio only stays charged for six to eight hours. For vacations, my husband and I use a cheaper travel weather radio that can be plugged into a wall or used with batteries (it cannot charge). And so, we bought two more for our parents. After purchasing a Weather Radio & Charge Cradle, which come to together, we decided that it was a must have for our whole family. My husband and I love this product. You must hit a button first. Despite not being able to use batteries, we still really like it. I don't know if any weather radio can meet every need.
Also, even when the volume is turned to the lowest option, off basically, you can still hear a voice. It also does NOT use batteries. We recommend it to everyone. It's bigger and bulkier and doesn't have as many features. However, I suppose that's about right for a day trip. It can only be charged by being plugged into the wall and set in the cradle, which we always leave it in. After it beeps, it doesn't automatically voice the warning or watch outloud, unlike the Weather Radio & Charge Cradle product.
They need to explain things better in this unit.****UPDATE 2/3/10**** I have been having some issued with the alert not going off for some flood warnings we have experinced this winter. no issues and im getting all the info i need with no problems. this radio is working great so far. It will go off for the weekly test and that is it. Even went off for an evacuation done for a fire north of me. Great unit but the only down fall is the directions. I have contacted the company and worked with them to resolve the issue. They are going to be replacing my unit in a few days.
And yes.the codes and channel were set properly. VERY pleased.I know I will like the portable aspect of this, two weeks ago I was working in my garage and didn't even know we were in a tornado alert until I went into the house and got my cell phone and saw that I had gotten a text alert.
This is great. OMG.
(I do have to keep it up where my cats can't get to it, as when the alarm goes off they don't like it and it is very "battable" HA).I have a Midland and the static is horrible, this one has none, and we live in the "boonies" of W Nebraska. I don't know what the people saying it is difficult to set up are doing, but I just glanced at the directions and had it set up in minutes.
Mine stays in the charger base, no trouble at all. There were several tornados in my area that day - and my Midland never went off - to be fair to Midland it was working fine before (except for the static).
I think you will be pleased w/ this if you purchase it.
